A typographic clock face designed with various sizes of vintage wood block numbers and characters.

The print was created by overprinting black/purple and fluorescent yellow ink layers with the final run being the numbers 3, 6, 9 and 12 in metallic silver.

A limited edition run of 12 prints were produced. Each print is unique in both style and layout.

“The King of the Mountains is the title given to the best climber in a cycling road race”.

This poster celebrates the Tour de Frances’ greatest Hors Categorie (beyond categorisation) climbs. These gruelling mountain stages define the historic road race and the overall best climber gets to wear the iconic polka dot jersey (le maillot à pois rouge).

Each print names the classic mountains in various shades of Cool Grey, each emerging from the mists of the paper. From the giant mountain passes on Col du Galibier and Col de l'Iseran to the more famous climbs of Alpe d'Huez and Mont Ventoux. The typographic posters were hand printed using vintage wood type and traditional printing techniques.

The study of process printing using the colours: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) has always been of interest to me. The way the colours interact and combine to create an almost endless colour palette is mind-blowing.

After much experimentation, trial and error, plus hours of ink mixing, I selected four sizes of the woodblock font - Helvetica and their corresponding point sizes. I then printed cyan, magenta and finally yellow in an off-set configuration. This technique showed how overprinting the transparent inks created new colours and textures, resulting in an alluring, multi-coloured, vibrant poster.
